CITY DEEP DIVE
Nanjing for First-Time Visitors
Nanjing is one of the easiest cities to underrate before arrival and one of the easiest to like once you slow down. It has major historical weight, but the pace is calmer than Beijing and the planning is simpler.
1. The mental map
Nanjing is best understood through a few separated history clusters rather than one dense core: the old city wall and Qinhuai side, the republican-era and memorial layer, and the Purple Mountain / Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum zone to the east.
The city is broad but not chaotic. For a first trip, think one inner-city history day and one eastern scenic-history day.
2. The must-see core
- Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. One of the city's defining visits; give it time and decent weather.
- Nanjing City Wall. Not as famous internationally as Xi'an's, but very strong for urban orientation.
- Confucius Temple / Qinhuai River area. Best as an evening atmosphere zone.
- Nanjing Museum or republican-history stops. Good for travelers who want depth beyond surface walking.
- Xuanwu Lake. The softer side of the city and a useful break from dense history.
3. Where to stay
| Area | Feels like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Xinjiekou | Most central modern base | Short practical stays |
| Near Confucius Temple | Atmospheric at night, more touristy | Travelers who like evening walks |
| Near Xuanwu Lake | More open and calmer | Relaxed pacing |
4. Food
Nanjing food sits in the gentler Jiangsu tradition but still has enough substance to feel distinct. This is a city of ducks, soups, and practical local meals rather than dramatic destination dining.
- Salted duck. The classic local reference point.
- Duck blood vermicelli soup. A very Nanjing bowl; try it once if you want the local signature.
- Simple Jiangnan dishes. Better in patient local restaurants than in tourist strips.
5. Transport inside the city
The metro is easy enough that Nanjing works well for first-timers, but the eastern scenic cluster still deserves its own half or full day.
6. A simple trip skeleton
- Day 1 - Core city. City wall segment, central district, Qinhuai riverside at night.
- Day 2 - Purple Mountain side. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, one museum or scenic stop, lighter dinner back in town.
7. Things that surprise first-time visitors
- Nanjing feels less stressful than many first-time visitors expect from a major Chinese city.
- The city's modern and historical layers coexist without the scale shock of Beijing.
- It works especially well as a slower contrast after Shanghai.
8. Where to go next
Nanjing fits naturally into a Shanghai-Suzhou-Hangzhou route, or as a quieter history stop before Xi'an or Beijing.
